Why did you move?

I suppose I had thoughts like everyone else who moves abroad to work and live in that I sick of the weather and way things were going generally.

How did you make the dream a reality?

I needed to get a job before I moved as I had hardly any money but really wanted to move to Gibraltar. After registering with RecruitGibraltar and having some phone interviews / conversations they managed to get me some phone interviews. I was then able to establish that companies were genuinely interested in me prior to flying over for face to face interviews. I flew over and saw 2 companies who both subsequently offered me jobs! I was also lucky enough to be helped with some relocation and was put up in flat for 2 months whilst I found somehtng more permanent.

Advice?

If at first you do not succeed keep on trying. It is not as easy as I thought it would be and I had to wait a few months for the right kind of job to come up but if you are persistent you make is happen.

Why did you move?

My family and I had been spending holidays in the area for years and really grew to like the lifestyle for the kids and ourselves. We had had enough of the weather in the UK and decided enough was enough!

How did you make the dream a reality?

I had found it hard to get people to take us seriously when we were living in the UK as I guess there are plenty of people who say they are going to move out to Gibraltar and never do! We managed to save some money for a few months of living on a shoestring and then just went for it by moving out! I devoted all my attention to trying to get a job and registered with RecruitGibraltar who subsequent invited me to a meeting and then got me some interviews. I was lucky enough to be offered a job in Gibraltar after 4 weeks of trying and have not looked back.

Advice?

If it is truely something you are committed to then you will need to make sacrifices to make it happen but it will be worth it in the end.

Susan – Dublin

Why did you move?

I had been dreaming about working in the day and then spending long evenings on the terrace sipping Rioja for years! I was sick of the weather in Ireland, the lack of outdoor activities and I just wanted to be near a beach. A few personal elements in my life changed so I decided to take the plunge and move to Southern Spain.

Problems?

My first problem was that I could not afford to just move away without going to a job, but it seemed nearly impossible to get a job unless I could personally interview. The answer for me was to get my CV together and send it out to RecruitGibraltar a few weeks prior to booking some time take a holiday in the area. I made RecruitGibraltar aware that I was coming over and they set up some interviews for the time I was in the Costa del Sol. In this way I got some sun and was able to personally attend interviews, which is what was necessary to secure a role. I was lucky enough to be offered a job and the company were happy to wait a few weeks for me to get over fulltime.

Advice?

Make sure you know what you want and where you want to be – then be very flexible!

Successes?

I am so happy that I finally plucked up the courage to make the move over and live a new phase in my life.
